Baby's Development

Feeding milestones

Watching your baby grow and develop over their first year of life is an incredible journey.Your baby experiences more new foods, tastes and textures in the first year, than probably any other time during their life. Over this time baby's birth weight almost triples.

Babies move from a totally liquid milk diet to learning to accept and eat a variety of new foods, progressing over time to a family diet. It is important to progress baby on learning how and what to eat based on their age and stage of development. Remember, every baby is unique and will be ready for new textures at different times, so look for your baby's signs to help you decide when to start.

To help, we've outlined the different ages and stages of babies development and some tips on how to start

4+ Months

Signs to look for

Sometime between 4-6 months most babies are ready for solids.

Ready for Solids?

  • Baby has good head and neck control
  • Baby takes interest in what you and the family eat
  • Baby opens mouth when food approaches
  • Baby is not satisfied after a milk feed

Help to get started

  • To start with, offer baby a small amount of smooth puréed food or baby rice cereal, just half to 1 teaspoon is enough
  • Gradually increase the amount offered as baby's appetite allows
  • Remember solids are just a 'taste', and that milk is still the most important food for baby

* NOT RECOMMENDED FOR INFANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 4 MONTHS
